While most Arabic LearnCUID groups produce short collaborative projects, a small number take their exploration much further — developing long-format cultural research projects that unfold over many months or even years. These intensive studies require dedicated mentorship, translation work, and scholarly reflection, often resulting in substantial outputs that bridge informal learning with academic inquiry.

What Are Long Projects?

Long projects are immersive, in-depth research journeys where learners:

  • Focus on a single, complex cultural theme or text

  • Engage in extensive translation and analysis of Arabic material

  • Collaborate closely with external mentors, translators, and subject experts

  • Produce a comprehensive, often publishable, research output

Unlike the shorter LearnCUID projects, these long studies often require:

  • 12 to 24 months of work (or more)

  • Deep reading of Arabic texts in original and translated form

  • Advanced research, annotation, and comparative study

  • A high level of intellectual commitment and cultural sensitivity

Why Long Projects Matter

Long projects are rare — but they represent some of the most meaningful outcomes of the Arabic LearnCUID model. They allow learners to:

  • Contribute to cultural knowledge from a fresh, youth-led perspective

  • Develop academic or professional portfolios grounded in cultural research

  • Engage in meaningful intercultural dialogue through literature

  • Create educational and literary resources for future learners

These projects demonstrate the power of informal, mentored, collaborative learning — not as a supplement to formal education, but as a deep, alternative model of inquiry.

Examples of Long Projects

1. Arabic Poetry: Poetic Production and Cultural Criticism

This project involved a two-year study of classical and modern Arabic poetry. Learners:

  • Translated a curated anthology of Arabic poems across five centuries

  • Annotated poetic forms and recurring metaphors (e.g., desert, exile, divine longing)

  • Analyzed responses to poetry by Arab critics and philosophers

  • Produced a bilingual booklet including both translations and reflective essays

Outcome: A teaching resource used in other LearnCUID groups and presented at a university seminar on comparative poetics.

2. Arabic Historical Fiction: Where Story and History Merge

This long project focused on Arabic-language historical novels that blend real events with fictional storytelling. The group:

  • Analyzed selected novels by Arab authors writing about colonialism, Islamic history, or civil conflict

  • Mapped the historical accuracy of referenced events

  • Collaborated with historians to contextualize key themes

  • Created a digital timeline and essay series on the ethics of historical fiction in Arabic literature

Outcome: A digital companion guide with study prompts, available to LearnCUID partners and high schools.

A deep dive into recent Saudi literature, this project explored themes of social transformation, gender, and urban identity. Over 18 months, the group:

  • Translated excerpts from novels rarely available in European languages

  • Interviewed scholars and translators working on Saudi literature

  • Produced a thematic analysis of generational conflict, political subtlety, and religious tone in modern Saudi writing

  • Compiled a reading list and critical introduction for new learners

Outcome: A resource used in Arabic Literature reading circles and an ongoing blog series.

A Note on Sustainability and Funding

Long projects are among the most powerful expressions of what Arabic LearnCUID can achieve — but they are also the most resource-intensive. Due to the significant funding required for translation, mentorship, and material access, many of these projects are currently on hold.

Some, including those highlighted on this page, are nearing completion and only need final translation or editorial support to be shared publicly. However, without dedicated funding, these efforts cannot continue at the depth and quality they require.

Arabic LearnCUID remains committed to resuming these long projects as soon as funding becomes available — ensuring that the insights, translations, and collaborative knowledge built over many months can be brought to life and shared with wider communities.
